When it comes to whitewater rafting in Colorado, you won’t find a more safety-first outfitter than Echo Canyon River Expeditions! We’ve been leading trips down the spectacular Arkansas River, one of the greatest whitewater destinations in North America, since 1978, and have always put the well-being and security of our guests at the very top of our priority list.
In fact, our Echo Canyon rafting safety standards and river-guide training go above and beyond state requirements. In this blog post, we’ll dig into our innovations and industry leadership when it comes to guiding river trips on some of the most hallowed rafting routes around.
Echo Canyon’s Safety Legacy & Statewide Influence
For nearly a half-century, Echo Canyon has helped river-runners from beginner-level to experts experience the majesty, might, and all-around awesomeness of Arkansas River rafting: from the Rocky Mountain wonders of Browns Canyon to the family-friendly excitement of the Bighorn Sheep Canyon and the world-class rapids of the stunning Royal Gorge.
Some of our own Echo Canyon safety protocols and training programs have helped influence the rafting industry across Colorado. Our own firm commitment to guest safety and employing only the most experienced and responsible river guides sees us go well beyond state requirements in many cases.
For example, our Echo Canyon “Sweep Kit”—the clutch of gear used in river emergencies—adds much on top of the state-mandated basics of a spare pump, additional personal flotation devices (PFDs), a patch-repair kit, and a simple first-aid kit. We also include CPR masks, epinephrine, extra bandages and gauze, trauma shears, and other first-aid supplies, and also have AEDs and backboards on hand, making our sections of the Arkansas the only routes in the state with riverside availability of this life-saving equipment.
Rafting Safety Guide Training & Excellence Beyond the Minimum
Our going above-and-beyond Colorado rafting standards also extends to the realm of river-guide training, part of the very core of Echo Canyon’s operations. Currently, the state requires 50 hours of certified guide training as well as CPR certification and first-aid instruction. Here at Echo Canyon, our guides receive closer to 200-250 hours of training as well as CPR/first-aid certification. On average, our training program takes four to five weeks, with lots of heavy-duty on-the-water work to ensure our guides are the best in the business.
We also strongly urge our first-year guides to additionally complete Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) training, and we require it of any who wish to become Trip Leaders. And to lead trips in the Royal Gorge, the most advanced rafting section we run, our guides must pass another course: Wilderness First Responder (WFR). Neither WAFA nor WFR courses are required by the state for river guides; they’re something we’ve taken upon ourselves to mandate as additional rafting certifications among our Echo Canyon Trip Leaders.
Best-in-Class Equipment, Safety Gear, & Instruction
From U.S. Coast Guard-certified Type V PFDs and helmets to wetsuits and, of course, top-grade whitewater rafts, we use only the finest equipment here at Echo Canyon River Expeditions.
In addition, you can expect thorough Echo Canyon safety briefings ahead of every trip—even our easiest Gentle Scenic Float—and clear, efficient instruction from our river guides. Among the more common safety concerns we field are guests worried about falling into the water, which is generally unlikely if you follow your guide’s instructions going through rapids, and who are concerned about their swimming ability. On that count, we recommend being a strong and confident swimmer for our adventure-class rafting sections, but also lead trips on low-grade whitewater and swiftwater, which are absolutely doable for weaker swimmers and even non-swimmers.
Do you have to paddle on our rafting trips? No, not if you don’t want to: We have sections (the Scenic Float and Bighorn Sheep Canyon) where guests aren’t required to paddle, the guide handling everything, and you and the rest of the party just enjoying the ride. Other routes, such as the Royal Gorge, muster everyone to lend a hand in paddling, which many folks are excited to do. In short, we’ve got the full range here at Echo Canyon: from easy beginner-level and intermediate family rafting trips to hardcore technical whitewater.
