Over the River® with Echo Canyon

Over the River® is more than just a way to experience the rapids of the Arkansas River with Echo Canyon, Over the River® is a large scale outdoor installation art project conceived by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Christo is hoping to exhibit Over the River® for a two week period of time in August of 2014. The plan is to suspend approximately 5.9 miles of fabric panels horizontally above the river in eight select areas of the Arkansas River coridoor and along Highway 50, between Cañon City and Salida. The semi-transparent, silvery panels will be suspended over cables anchored high on the banks of the river so rafters can experience the project from below, while travellers on Highway 50 will be able to enjoy it from above.

A major milestone for Christo's Over the River® project was accomplished recently when the Bureau of Land Management released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) selecting the artist's vision to suspend 5.9 miles of fabric above the Arkansas River. It is estimated that August, 2015, will be the earliest the installation can be completed and ready for viewing. And what better way to experience the project than a raft trip with Echo Canyon River Expeditions! You will get to experience the project as the artist intended, both from above the fabric panels via our shuttle ride to the river launch point, and then by taking our time rafting the class III rapids beneath Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Over the River® installation project!
